The following is a list of DAT sample questions which will allow you to get a better idea of the general concepts that the DAT covers for each of the sections.

(1) Starch, cellulose, and glycogen are all?

A. Proteins

B. Linked internally by hydrogen bonds

C. Water soluble

D. Polymers of glucose

E. Nucleic acids

Answer: D. Starch, cellulose, and glycogen are all polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are sugar monosaccharides that have been linked together by glycosidic bonds to form a chain. Although this question is rather straightforward knowledge, a background in biochemistry and organic chemistry may help to answer this question.

Inorganic Chemistry

(1) When the volume of a gas is decreased at constant temperature, the pressure increases because the molecules

A. move faster

B. move slower

C. become heavier

D. become lighter

E. strike a unit area of the container more often

Answer: E. Changes in temperature affect the speed of molecules. Because the temperature is remaining constant, we can automatically remove answer choices A & B. Choices C & D are not affected by a change in volume. Therefore, we are left with answer E, which is in fact the reason why pressure increases when you decrease the volume in a container.

Organic Chemistry

(1) A characteristic feature of the SN2 reaction mechanism is that

A. it follows first-order kinetics

B. it produces stereochemical inversion of configuration

C. there is no rate-determining step

D. steric factors have little influence of the reaction rate constant

E. collision of three or more particles is required

Answer: B. Let’s start by narrowing down the answer choices we know are not right. The “2″ in SN2 means that it follows second order kinetics, hence A is wrong. The rate determining step in an SN2 reaction is dependent upon the the nature of both the leaving group and the nucleophile, hence C is wrong. Steric factors are not very important in an SN1 reaction, but they are in an SN2 reaction, hence D is wrong. E is wrong because only a decent leaving group and good nucleophile are required for an SN2 reaction.

Quantitative Reasoning

(1) If 1 inch equals 2.5 centimeters, then 25 meters equals how many inches

A. .01

B. 0.1

C. 10

D. 62.5

E. 1,000

Answer: E. If you work this out by hand this problem is just a simple unit conversion. There are 100 centimeters in a meter, thus there are 2,500 centimeters in 25 meters. 2,500/2.5 (because there are 2.5 centimeters in an inch) = 1,000 inches in 25 meters.
